Recap
BNA Quarterly Meeting
Our last QM was May 7th. At this meeting there was an issue with BNA getting access to the microphone at the Community Center. Don Piper reached out to the Site Supervisor (Lisa McDonald) and confirmed we should always have access to this. There was also an issue with the current projector BNA has and how it should be updated. We discussed having BNA donate a large screen TV that everyone at the Community Center could then use. Josh Nelson and Don Piper will discuss with the BNA board at the June meeting.
SCRUB
May 17th was the date we partnered with other Neighborhood Associations for SCRUB at Polk County River Place. We do not have the donation amount yet (this is divided between Neighborhoods by number of volunteers per Association), but do know the number of vehicles tallied was 675 (40 more than 2024). The traffic flow seemed lower but that can be attributed to great volunteers and the number of times we have done this event.
We did provide feedback to the Lower Beaverdale president Jeremy Geerdes (head volunteer coordinator) that it would be beneficial to staff a volunteer near the bike trail and east entrance off Euclid Ave where numerous vehicles turned in instead of using the west entrance. Although the east location was clearly marked as exit only and had to remain open for city trucks to enter/exit, a volunteer stationed there helped make sure folks were using the correct entrance.
We also discussed having a couple walkie talkies to help with vehicle flow due to limited visibility between the last few volunteers near the drop off bins. Hoping the city may have these for next year.
The shift times are currently overlapped by an hour. This seems to be more than is needed. Suggestion is to drop that to 30 minutes.
Beaverdale Big Event
This event is in its 2nd year with 3 volunteer events and items donation drive. The donation drive runs May 12th-31st and the 3 volunteer events is May 31st. Depending on the event, volunteer times are 8-10 AM (Moore Elementary), 9-11 AM (Hillis Elementary) and 10AM-12PM (DSM Franklin Library). Moore Elementary is full as of May 21st. There is a need for garden tools (shovels, weeding tools) at both schools. Additional info on this event can be found at https://beaverdalebigevent.com/. Thanks to Kevin Moser for all the work he has put into this event for the last 2 years (even with a new baby this year!).
National Night Out
NNO this year is Tuesday August 5th. The planned time is 6-8 PM. We have the main business locked in. Those are Price Chopper Grocery, Snookies Ice Cream and Westminster Presbyterian Church. We have numerous other businesses that we need to reach out to.
There is an outstanding question if we need to purchase liability insurance for this event since the 41st construction project is reducing traffic issues. BNA has a blanket policy and Sasha Kamper is going to confirm if that BNA policy will also cover this event.
With just more than two months to go for this event we need to reach out to the other Beaverdale businesses and activities very soon. For planning purposes, we have a google doc from previous year (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11Ioxl2Hid2G9_dWEJw6IzO-N-OdWUv3ThscgP7DjZcY/edit?usp=sharing)
Additional Item
Josh Nelson has been working on getting the BNA storage shed on Meredith Ave cleaned up and organized. If you are aware of anything that can be removed, please visit the storage shed and/or reach out to Josh. If you do need to remove anything for an upcoming event, PLEASE put back in same location.
