New BNA board members and leaders elected

A new year brings new board members and leaders to the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association.

At the first quarter meeting held Tuesday, February 6th, BNA members re-elected incumbents Karla Rangel, Craig VandeVenter, Therese Herold, and Derek Self to two-year terms on the board. Members also elected two new board members, Josh Nelson and Jesse Coleman. 

Two long-time board members rotated off the board after serving the maximum number of three two-year terms - President Marcus Coenen and board member Adam Plagge. Treasurer Jay Kozel presented each of them a gift and thanked them for their service.

The board then elected leaders for the coming year - President Dave Busiek, Vice-president Nick Mertes, Treasurer Jay Kozel and Secretary Craig VandeVenter.

Mayor Boesen talks with BNA members

Des Moines' new mayor, Connie Boesen, spoke briefly about plans for her first 100 days in office. Boesen said her priorities include regional transportation, downtown development, and funding for infrastructure such as the Southeast Connector.

City council candidate Simonson

Mike Simonson, a candidate for the at-large seat on the Des Moines city council, introduced himself to Beaverdale residents. The at-large seat is open due to Boesen's election as mayor. The council has scheduled a special election for Marcy 19th. Simonson owns an architectural firm. He has served 12 years on the Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission and serves on a number of other community organizations.

Justyn Lewis has also announced plans to run for the open at-large seat. 

Candidates have until Februay 23rd to turn in nomination petitions.
