Six months after it was erected, a cellphone tower in the heart of the Beaverdale business district is being put in service.

Tower crews began installing antennas at the top of the 150-foot tall monopole tower on Monday, August 25th. The antennas will provide a stronger cell signal in Beaverdale by T-Mobile. The work should be completed within two weeks.

The tower, which was permitted last year by the city of Des Moines, sits behind the Acanthus Lodge at 4133 Urbandale Avenue. A North Carolina company, Tower Co, leased the land from the lodge and built the tower. Tower Co will lease the antenna space to T-Mobile. There's room for more antennas at the top of the tower should other cell providers wish to lease space.

After being erected in February, the tower sat empty until the antenna work began this week.

A representative from Tower Co also tells beaverdale.org that the tower manufacturer will paint the tower. Although it was erected in February, the surface of the tower is already showing discoloration, with streaks and patches of brown marring its surface. The tower will be painted gray.
