Minutes of the May 6, 2025 Quarterly Meeting of the BNA
Meeting started – 7 pm
Board report – Dave Busiek
The BNA Board is completing a facilitated strategic planning process to address:
- Membership
- Communications
- Committee structure.
The Board is also redoing the BNA webpage which will be up by late summer or early fall.
All neighborhood associations are now required to apply to the city every year to maintain their association designation, which will require the board to include a treasurer’s report and minutes at each meeting.
Green State is closing its Beaverdale Office and moving to a new building at Merle Hay and Douglas.
Treasurer’s Report – Jessie Coleman
The BNA has $118,000 in assets and $0 in liabilities. The BNA is holding $30,000 as the fiscal agent for Beaverdale Books, which is organizing the Book Festival.
BNA has received a $10,000 grant for the Blue Grass Festival. Sponsorship is a little lower than expected at this point.
Some local advertisers have pulled their adds.
Net income for the year (? Not sure of time frame) is $6,944
City Council - Councilman Chris Coleman
Councilman Chris Coleman reported on the city’s approved plan to redo Douglas Avenue, DART and a plan just adopted by the City Council to address homeless.
Police Department -Trudy Paulson
Fifteen burglaries were reported between April 21 and 5/6.
City Parks and Recreation - Amarre Negussi
Five hundred kids are typically served by the Park District’s frere camps. They include free breakfast, lunch and snacks to take up. Adult soft ball registration is doing on for spring and summer leagues.
Beautification Committee – Nancy Dunbar
The 20th BNA Garden Walk will take place on June 7. Seven gardens will be on the walk.
Public Affairs – Kevin Moser
Donations for hygiene products, food, clothes and pet food can be made through Beaverdale Big Event.com.
The Day of Service activities will include a reading program at the library, converting plant beds at Hillis Elementary .School to an outdoor classroom and landscape work at Moore Elementary School.
The Megascrub is May 17 (7am to 1pm) at Riverplace. Volunteers are needed for two shifts – 6:30 to 10:30 am and 9:30 am to 1:30 pm.
The blue Grass festival will be held at Tower Park on July 19 from 2:30 to 10:00 pm.
Traffic Study – Corey Bogenreif, principal traffic engineer for Des Moines
Vision Zero Transportation Safety Action Plan, is the city’s plan to eliminate fatalities and severe injuries.
Safety crash data has determined the order of projects to be undertaken to repair or change street layouts. The Beaver Bend project has been part of this city-wide traffic plan. The project is expected to be completed in June.
