Beaverdale Beautification Committee meeting 9/20/22

 

Attending: Nancy Dunbar, Carole Betts, Mary Ellen Burr, Toni Hayes, Sasha Kamper, Marion Wissler, Terry Thielen

 

PARKS:  Ashby: Toni said annuals in the sign bed have been replaced with mums by the city.  Other beds have been weeded.  Beaverdale: annuals we planted still in place, will look into adding more perennials next year in back of sign.  Fundraising being done for master plan.   Westchester: annuals and roses looked good.   Witmer: park dedication unknown

 

TREES:  Nancy and Terry are watering memorial trees including Tom Vlassis, Mary Lou.  Neighbors are taking care of Marv’s.  Sasha submitted an application with Friends of DM Parks to plant  a memorial tree for her dad. Application requests 3 tree selections, 3 site locations, and $500. A memorial tree for Theresa Graziano was planted during Fall Festival. Shane predug the hole and brought water and fencing.  Carole volunteered to water the tree twice a week.

 

FLOWERS:  Flower order is due September 30.  Toni will submit order to city.  John has sent his request for Bel-Air and Palm Ave.  Still need order from Bob Knutson.  Rest of order for park beds will be same as last year.  

 

FALL CLEANUP: Will schedule fall cleanup of flower beds after frost, probably in October.  Will leave alyssum in place at 34th St. to self seed.

 

URBANDALE MEDIAN: The new Knockout rose has been doing well.  Nancy has been watering weekly..  Nancy and Mary Ellen are picking up trash in median on a regular basis. 

 

STREETSCAPE: Some maintenance was done prior to Fall Festival: some weeding, mulching, some suckers cut back. But overall maintenance of beds has been poor while maintenance of planters has been fine. Sasha is contacting CeCe and Marcus to meet about steps to discuss problems with Boesens. 

 

2023 GARDEN WALK: Decided to schedule for June 10. Gardens: Toni Hayes, Mary Ellen/Fred Burr, Sean Bagnewski.  Possible gardens: Kris Sutton, Beth Wilson, Tim/Grace St. Claire, Vivienne Watrous, Vicki Tow, 38th St. rain garden, 47th St white picket fence, tree carvings

 

NEXT MEETING: Oct. 18th, 6:30 PM at 6336 Hickman Rd.
