Beaverdale Beautification Committee meeting 4/18/23

 

Attending: Nancy Dunbar, Donisue Rupp, Marion Wissler, John Waters Terry Thielen, Jean Swanson, Mary Ellen Burr

 

PARKS:  Beaverdale - committee completed cleanup for Easter Egg Hunt Friday afternoon in summer temps, Easter Egg Hunt drew smaller crowds due to cold temps and high winds.  Ashby - clean up April 19 at 12:30,  Westchester - ask Parks & Rec if flower bed can be prepped like others, roses will need to be pruned,  Witmer - watch for dedication info.  Bel-Air & Palm Ave. islands - John took care of Bel-Air, Angela Palm Ave..

 

TREES:  A tree has been planted in Ashby Park for Sasha’s dad close to the parking lot, will schedule a ceremony on June 3rd.  Eugene’s family has requested a Tulip Tree to be planted in the Urbandale median between 38th & 36th Sts on the morning of May 13th. Nancy met with Shane to mark a spot, and will tag a B&B tree at Miller Nursery which they will plant.  Carole will continue to water Theresa’s tree this season.  Tom Vlassis tree and Mary Lou’s have been watered for 2 seasons and should be OK unless we have drought conditions.  Neighbors will continue to water Marv’s tree. 

 

URBANDALE AVE CLEANUP: Donisue & Nancy cut back the nepeta at the intersection and it looks great.  Alyssum has been ordered for the bed near 34th St - will watch for new seedlings to appear. Branches and trash were picked up on the Urbandale median on April15 by Sasha, Terry, John, Kathy, Carole, Adam, & Nancy. Adam offered the use of his truck to dispose of the branches. Nancy & Mary Ellen will continue to walk the median on a regular basis to collect 

trash. 

 

FLOWER PICK UP AND PLANTING: Pick up is scheduled for May 19th at 9 AM with planting to follow at 10 AM in the parks.

 

SCRUB: is scheduled for May 20 7AM - 1 PM, volunteers will be needed

 

2023 GARDEN WALK: Scheduled for June 10, 9am - 3pm. Bookmarks are being distributed to gardeners and businesses. Plan to print 40 posters that Kate has designed. Sponsorships: Calvin/$500, Green Family Flooring/$200, BackCountry/$100. Kate is working on Banner Yard signs can be updated with stickers. Committed gardens: Toni Hayes, Mary Ellen/Fred Burr, Sean Bagnewski, Calvin Community, Dan/Sarah Fillius, Jeremy Lewis. Other possible gardens: Denny/Sally Carney at 1435 41st St recommended by Dale Van de Harr. Sue Huber, Scott/Shelby Meredith, Ryan Kolder.  Gardeners will provide descriptions by 1st week of May so tickets can be printed.  Limit sales to 500. Jean will schedule volunteers, 2 per shift. No progress on driveby tree carvings idea: Giraffe-Vivienne Watrous on Raymond Dr, Terrier-4023 Franklin. Bulldog-2831 46th St.,Owl-2119 40th Place, Gnome-4315 Beavercrest, Beaver-4038 Adams & 4225 Beavercrest, Eagle- Adams.. John Holtorf will take photos. Photos are provided to gardeners after event and for use on Garden Walk Facebook page.  Check if photos could be used for a calendar as a fundraiser.

 

STREETSCAPE: need to monitor and document maintenance with photos this season.

 

COMMUNICATION TO NEW MEMBERS: Nancy will continue to send letter to new members interested in Beautification to recruit new volunteers

 

NEXT MEETING: May 16th at 6:30 at 6336 Hickman Rd.
