Beaverdale Beautification Committee meeting 2/21/23

 

Attending: Nancy Dunbar, Donisue Rupp, Toni Hayes, Marion Wissler, Sasha Kamper, John Water

 

PARKS:  cleanups will be scheduled as needed: Beaverdale - on March 31st before Easter Egg Hunt, Ashby - flower beds when weather permits. Westchester - ask Parks & Rec if flower bed can be prepped like others, roses will need to be pruned,  Witmer - watch for dedication info.  Bel-Air & Palm Ave. islands - a neighbor has shown interest in adding hostas.

 

TREES:  A tree has been planted in Ashby Park for Sasha’s dad close to the parking lot, will schedule a ceremony in the spring  Donations are being collected for a tree in memory of Eugene - prefer to plant in median. Nancy will contact Shane about location and varieties. Will continue to water Theresa’s tree in spring.  Tom Vlassis tree and Mary Lou’s have been watered for 2 seasons and should be OK unless we have drought conditions.

 

URBANDALE AVE CLEANUP: nepeta at intersection will be cut back next month, alyssum at bed near 34th St will be removed - will watch for new seedlings to appear.  Nancy has walked the west median for trash and will continue. Check with Mary Ellen about east median.

 

2023 GARDEN WALK: Scheduled for June 10, 9am - 3pm. A request for gardens was in the recent Sidewalk.  Committed gardens: Toni Hayes, Mary Ellen/Fred Burr, Sean Bagnewski, Calvin Community. Other possible gardens: Denny/Sally Carney at 1435 41st St recommended by Dale Van de Harr. Ryan Kolder, Dave Busiek/Laura Sands,Kristine Higdon, Angela Lawrence, Beth Wilson,, Vicki Tow, 38th St. rain garden, Westminster Refugee Garden, Franklin Community Gardens. Driveby tree carvings: Giraffe-Vivienne Watrous on Raymond Dr, Terrier-4023 Franklin. Bulldog-2831 46th St.,Owl-2119 40th Place, Gnome-4315 Beavercrest, Beaver-4038 Adams & 4225 Beavercrest, Eagle- Adams. Toni & Sasha will work on scavenger hunt clues. Kate designed new bookmark and poster.  Need to decide if we will limit tickets sold. Toni prefers limit to 400 to avoid damage to garden turf. Will check with other gardeners. Sasha checking on possible online sales through Eventbrite.   

 

STREETSCAPE: need to monitor and document  maintenance this season.

 

COMMUNICATION TO NEW MEMBERS: new welcoming letter created by Toni and Terry was sent to 12 members indicating an interest in Beautification.  Received 3 responses with interest in volunteering.

 

NEXT MEETING: March 21 at 6:30  at 6336 Hickman Rd.  Calvin Community has offered the use of their rec room or meeting room in new building for future meetings.
