Three Proposals to be Presented for Future Development of Rice School Site

Des Moines- Three firms have been selected to present plans for the redevelopment of the former Rice Elementary School site on Beaver Avenue.  The plans will be presented during a public interview to be held on Monday, September 18, in the Hoover High School auditorium from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The three firms were selected by a committee comprised of members from Des Moines Public Schools, City of Des Moines Economic Development Department, Beaverdale Neighborhood Association, Beaverdale Main Street Initiative and the Beaverdale Business Coalition.  The firms selected for public interview include:

Nelson Development, West Des Moines

Rice Development Partners, Des Moines

The Regency Companies, West Des Moines.

All three proposals involve “mixed use” plans that are a combination of retail space and housing, such as row houses, townhomes, condos, or live-work lofts.

The proposals were among six excellent responses to a request for proposals for the sale and disposition of the former Rice School site.  The six also included Ewing Land Development & Services, Pella; Wells + Associates, West Des Moines; and Sherman Associates Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Following the public interviews, the selection committee will forward a recommendation to the Superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools during the week of September 25th with anticipated school board consideration in October.

Copies of the proposals will be posted on the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association website.
