NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Beaverdale Native Returns to Share Storytelling Talent
Des Moines Storyteller Jim Woodard, a Des Moines native and resident storyteller at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California since 1995, will return to his hometown to present several programs on September 22 and 23.
Woodard, who has presented hundreds of storytelling programs in California and the Midwest over the past 15 years, received The George Washington Award for Excellence in Public Communications from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for his series of historic and patriotic storytelling programs. It’s the only such national Freedoms Foundation award presented to an oral storyteller.
His storytelling activities started many years ago in Des Moines. In Woodard’s late teens he periodically took a group of boys from the Des Moines Children’s Home on fishing outings. While sitting on the river bank waiting for fish to bite, he would tell the boys stories.
Later, he continued to develop his storytelling skills when working as a counselor at Boys Town, Neb.
Woodard grew up in the Beaverdale area in northwest Des Moines. He attended Rice Elementary, Roosevelt High School and Drake University. He then worked in Des Moines broadcasting with a disc jockey program every weekday evening on KSO radio – the Jim Woody Show. He also held on-air positions on KRNT radio and KCCI-TV (then KRNT-TV).
His father, Dr. Floyd Woodard, was a practicing family physician and obstetrician in Des Moines for 35 years. He ushered many new Iowans into the world, his son said.
Jim Woodard now lives in Ventura, Calif. In addition to storytelling, he writes a nationally syndicated newspaper column on real estate news and trends, along with freelance features. He recently completed a book on Ventura County.
Woodard’s upcoming programs in Des Moines are scheduled at Wesley Acres retirement community at 3520 Grand Avenue on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 1:30 p.m.; Des Moines Public Library, Franklin Avenue Branch, on Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. (open and free to public); and Beaverdale Estates Retirement Homes at 4610 Douglas Avenue on Friday, Sept. 23, at 1:30 p.m.
