2008 SCRUB

The Beaverdale Neighborhood Association and Lower Beaver Neighborhood Association will again be hosting the 2008 Spring Clean-up to Remove Urban Blight (SCRUB) at the old Target store parking lot located at Euclid and ML King. This space is now occupied by the Polk Co. Board of Supervisors. It is the same location as last year. The date for this year’s SCRUB will be Saturday, June 7 and the hours will be from 7 a.m. until noon. The MWA Transfer Station located at 4198
Delaware will be open from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. for those who do not want to wait in line at the SCRUB location.

The event is open to all Des Moines residents. Proof of Residency will be required: Photo ID or current utility bill will be accepted. Commercial haulers are to use the landfill. They will not be allowed at the neighborhood sites. Vehicle size will be pickups (maximum 4’ sideboards), cars and small trailers.

Yard waste will not be accepted at the neighborhood sites. All yard waste will need to be hauled to the MWAMetroCompostCenter at 1601 Harriet.

Items allowed are: general trash including furniture, lawn mowers without liquids, televisions, computers, tires (on or off the rim), and appliances. This year the City is trying a pilot program of not charging for appliances. This is only a pilot program and may or may not be carried on in coming years.

Items not allowed: car batteries, propane tanks, toxic liquids such as oil, paint, etc. and toxic or hazardous chemicals. Call the Metro Waste Authority’s RegionalCollectionCenter for Household Hazardous Waste at 967-5512 to dispose of these items.

There will be volunteers at the location to direct traffic. Plan to unload your own vehicle and do so within 15 minutes. Place all items in dumpsters or compactors as directed. Clean up your own mess after you are unloaded.

For more information please contact Delos Swanson (Beaverdale Neighborhood Association) at 276-5668 or 480-7924, swanson515@aol.com or Bill Darby (Lower Beaver Neighborhood Association) at 279-7032. The Des Moines Public Works Dept. can also be contacted at 283-4950.

Help keep our neighborhood clean by participating in this year’s event.

Please Note: John Brommel, local sculptor, will be at the location to recycle/reuse any types of metal thrown away such as copper, brass, aluminum, stainless, or steel. If you’d like to contact John to arrange pick up of these materials in advance, email jbrommel3@mchsi.com or call 314-2096.
