BNA Mission
The Beaverdale neighborhood Association is neighbors working together to promote the social welfare of the Beaverdale area by bringing about civic betterment and social improvements for the common good and general welfare of the community.

The BNA is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. Your company may have a matching funds program.

The BNA will hold its annual meeting Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, and elect new members to the BNA Board of Directors for a two-year term.  There are 6 candidates running for 4 open seats.

Roy Cacek, Theresa Graziano, Dave Koester, Bill Miller, Pam Nagel and Jerry Szumski.

Roy Cacek

Roy is seeking his second term as a board member of the BNA and has lived in Beaverdale since 2001. He has actively participated in many facets of the neighborhood association by working with the Communications Committee in redesigning the BNA web site, was part of the committee that presented Jazz in July, helped with the Grass Seat Cinema and chairs the committee for the annual Member Appreciation Party. He also painted the 2006 Fall Festival poster and t-shirt design titled “Autumn Foliage”. Roy is a professor of art at Grand View College and lives in Beaverdale with his wife Holly and their dog Bilbo.

Theresa Graziano

Theresa is seeking re-election to the BNA Board of Directors with the desire to continue her input on the various developments that are happening in our neighborhood. Theresa has been involved with the BNA since it began. She chaired the Special Events committee for several years and helped with various other committees. Theresa chairs the Beaverdale Fall Festival, which she hopes always gives Beaverdale positive exposure to the rest of the neighborhoods. Living here for 30 years has given Theresa a sense of pride that she lives in an area that has such an active association. Theresa is proud to live in Beaverdale and wants to continue to serve on the Board to show how much she cares about our future. Theresa is committed to keeping Beaverdale be the #1 neighborhood where everyone wants to live!

Dave Koester

Dave Koester is running for the BNA board because he loves living here and would like to offer his assistance in making it an even better place to live. He has lived in Beaverdale since 1963. Dave has helped with Beaverdale Easter Egg Hunt, Jazz in July, and Fall Festival. He also volunteers through Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Des Moines and Salvation Army homeless feeding program.

Dave has been married for 21 years to his wife, Coby. They have two children, Cate and John. Dave is a sales representative with Unisource. His other interests include: walking, boating, working on his home and yard

Bill Miller

Bill has been president of the BNA for three years after first becoming a board member in 2003. He has served on the BNA Public Affairs and History committees and volunteered or otherwise contributed to the work of the Communications, Beautification, Membership, and various special event committees. Bill is also a Beaverdale Fall Festival board member and has participated in the Beaverdale revitalization process since its inception including serving for a time, as a BNA representative on the Beaverdale Main Street Iowa board of directors. Bill and his wife Lucy have been Beaverdale residents for nearly five years. When not doing "Beaverdale stuff," Bill is an attorney at Dorsey & Whitney LLP.

Pam Nagel
Pan was born in Iowa City while her dad finished at Iowa and is in the first year of 'baby boomers'. She has lived in Des Moines since she returned to Des Moines, in 1947. Pam attended Cattell and Moore elementary schools, Franklin Jr. high and North High. She has two married daughters and four grandchildren, all living in Iowa.

Pam believes that this community can again work together to build up a positive reputation and move forward to continue our best old traditions and develop new ways to unite us for the good of our residents and businesses. She wants to work with both groups, as we are a 'team', not a case of 'us and them'.

Pam firmly believes that the Beaverdale community can help the other areas of Des Moines grow into 'teams' and we will all be better for it.

Jerry Szumski

Beaverdale has been Jerry’s home neighborhood since 1963. Jerry has never seriously considered leaving Beaverdale, low water pressure and obsolete storm drainage notwithstanding.

Jerry takes an active role in neighborhood betterment activities from the homeowner point of view; focusing mainly on the common good and general community welfare and security; helping assure effective communication among membership and the neighborhood in general; contributing to business district discussion and planning; encouraging a maximum of green space, plantings, and natural amenities all through Beaverdale.

In retirement Jerry has participated in BNA activities off and on, including Fall Festival cleanup, the Beautification Committee a bit, serving chili at the 2006 annual meeting, and participation in the 2004 meetings on revitalization of the business district. For four years Jerry has served as a reading mentor at Monroe School. He volunteers at the DMARC food pantry and was among the first volunteers at the new Science Center. Jerry participates in political activity.
