DEALING WITH PANHANDLERS (We are repeating this info, as the problem still persists.)
An increase in door-to-door panhandling in Beaverdale has caused concern. According to police, these visitors return because they've been successful in getting donations in the past. If coming to Beaverdale continues to be profitable, they will return again. We're providing the following information because the problem continues.
Panhandlers often appear to have legitimate needs, but it's important to remember that they can pose a threat to you and your family. If you choose to open the door at all, do so with extreme caution, as panhandlers have been known to force their way in. If a stranger visits your home with a need for money, regardless of his story, he is most likely a panhandler.
Realize that not giving a panhandler money is probably the most effective way to keep them out of the neighborhood. A few things to keep in mind: don't open your door to strangers, and if you are ever unsure about a visitor to your street, call the Des Moines Police at 283-4311. The police will be able to check into any concerns and look out for trouble before it strikes.
