WHO: The BNA is led by an 11-member board, the members of which are elected for two-year terms. The Board meets monthly and works closely with several committees to accomplish the goals of the association. WHAT: The BNA is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that Beaverdale remains a vital community in which to live. WHEN: Formed in June 1990, the BNA quickly became one of the largest neighborhood associations in Des Moines. The association celebrated its 15-year anniversary in 2005. WHERE: The Beaverdale neighborhood is generally defined as the community existing between 30th Street and 48th Place from the east and west and between Douglas and Forest avenues from the north and south. WHY: A primary goal of the BNA is to give all Beaverdale residents an active voice in the future of the neighborhood by working closely with the City of Des Moines, Polk County, Beaverdale businesses and organizations and neighbors to implement actions that cover the major issues facing the residential, commercial and public facets of the area. The BNA MISSION is to promote the social welfare of the Beaverdale area by bringing about civic betterment and social improvements for the common good and general welfare of the people of the community. BOARD MEETINGS: Normally at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at Calvin Community, Garden Level, 4210 Hickman Rd. 2008 meeting schedule: Feb. 7, March 6, April 3, May 1, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, Sept. 4, Oct. 2, Nov. 6, Dec. TBD. PUBLIC BNA QUARTERLY MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS: Normally at 7 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday in February, April, August and November at the Northwest Community Center, 5110 Franklin Ave., just west of the Franklin Library (parking on south side). Meetings typically feature speakers, police reports, door prizes and food, and all meetings are open to the public. Meeting information is published in The Sidewalk and announced via email. Meeting Minutes are available by contacting Bill Miller, BNA Board President. 2008 meeting schedule: Feb. 12, May 13, Aug. 12 and Nov. 11. 2008 BNA activities include: Annual Meeting and chili supper; Annual Easter Egg Hunt; Home Improvement seminars; SCRUB; many beautification activities; membership appreciation event; family movie night in the park; Garden Tour; History Tour; Jazz in July concert; Bar crawl; National Night Out Against Crime; Beaverdale Fall Festival; Holiday Lights Contest; and a membership appreciation Holiday Party. The BNA newsletter, The Sidewalk, is published quarterly and is delivered prior to the quarterly membership meetings. The BNA Web site is updated periodically and is consistently receiving upgrades. Information updates and announcements are sent via email to members who provide their addresses. |
