The 2010 BNA Annual Meeting and Election of Board of Directors will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Northwest Community Center, 5110 Franklin Ave. All Beaverdale residents are welcome to attend. The Annual Meeting will begin with the election of Board of Directors at 7 p.m.
The following requirements must be met to be eligible to vote in the BNA elections:
Each single membership ($15) is entitled to one vote.• Each family membership ($25) is entitled to two votes.• Each business membership ($50) is entitled to two votes.• All voters must be 18 years of age before Jan. 31, 2010.• All voters must be paid members by Jan. 31, 2010.• The following candidates will be running for six open seats on the Board of Directors. Voting for a write-in candidate is acceptable. You will find more election information on our web site, www.beaverdale.org.
Below are the candidates (agreeing to run at time of press) listed in alphabetical order:
Eugene “Gene” Buckmiller
Eugene attended Orient school and graduated in 1950. He entered the Air Force in 1951. He has four daughters; three of them live in the Beaverdale area. He has three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Gene farmed, was on the volunteer fire department, Boy Scout leader and worked for the city of Orient before moving to Des Moines. While living in Des Moines, he worked for ACCO Unlimited in Johnston and LeMar Industries in Des Moines. Gene has lived in the Beaverdale area for 30 years. He is a member of the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association, has helped build floats for the past two years and has served on the Beautification Committee for five years. Gene was also adj. of the Legion for a number of years. Gene and his wife were housing parents for the Des Moines Buccaneers for 25 years.
Marlyn Freese
Marlyn grew up in Southeast Iowa and moved to Des Moines after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa. Marlyn has worked at Wells Fargo Financial as a compliance consultant for the last eight years. Marlyn and wife, Roberta, purchased their current Beaverdale home in 2000. In addition to volunteering over the years for such activities as National Night Out, Rebuilding Together and the Fall Festival Parade, Marlyn and Roberta have organized and hosted their annual 40th Place block party for the last eight years. Marlyn is running for a board position to remain active in the community in which he lives. It is Marlyn’s wish to see Beaverdale progress into the future while maintaining the uniqueness that makes it feel like home to its current residents and those of the future.
Bill Gray
Bill was born and raised in Des Moines and has been a Beaverdale resident since 1976. He is an alum of the University of Iowa. Bill joined the Beaverdale Neighborhood Association when it first was organized back in 1990 and stayed on and off until 1998 when he became a full-time member. Bill and wife, Ann, have lived in their home on Franklin Avenue since 1982 and raised their four children there. Bill retired from Avaya (a Bell System spin-off) in 2001 after 24 years and went to work for a business partner of Avaya and is still working there today. While raising their children, Bill volunteered for many of the activities in which their children were involved. He volunteered and coached in the Beaverdale Little League, Northwest Soccer Club, Metro Basketball League, Parochial Football League, Maroon Mat Club, as well as Dowling Wrestling Team and Dowling Golf Team. Bill also served as a Booster Club president for four years. In addition, he has volunteered for various committees and boards for the City of Des Moines. Bill served on the Des Moines Softball & Soccer Site Selection Committee in the early 90’s and the Des Moines Softball Steering Committee for over 20 years. For the last eight years, he has been a member of the City of Des Moines Zoning Board of Adjustment. Bill’s interest in becoming a member of the BNA board of directors is to continue to keep Beaverdale the top neighborhood in our city. He wants to keep our neighborhood safe and vibrant for generations to come. He’d like Beaverdale to be a good place to do business. We have a fine jewel here in the city and Bill wants to keep it that way.
Mike Kamper (incumbent)
Mike is seeking re-election to the BNA Board of Directors for his second term. Mike served as Secretary his first year and has been serving as President for almost the full last year. Mike would like to continue working with neighbors on the various activities and developments in the area. Mike and wife, Sasha, have lived in Beaverdale for over 17 years and enjoy the shops, restaurants and most importantly the friendly neighbors. Mike is proud to live in Beaverdale and feels it is important to give back to the community to continue making Beaverdale a fun and exciting place to live.
Cindy Smith (incumbent)
Cindy has lived in Beaverdale for more than 30 years. She grew up in the area and currently resides in her childhood home. She is serving her second two-year term for the BNA and is currently BNA Vice-President and membership chair. She also coordinates the efforts for the small Beaverdale neighborhood yard signs. Cindy believes strongly in community service as a worthwhile and important endeavor. Her past experience includes nine years on Plan & Zoning Commission, City of Des Moines, and involvement with the Hoover High School Booster Club. She has been closely involved with the many accomplishments of the BNA board and would like to remain part of this robust team for another two-year term.
Shari Tenney
Shari has lived in Beaverdale for the last 20 years and remained in Des Moines after graduating from Drake University in the ‘70’s. She has worked for Drake the last 13 years as an administrative assistant. She is a committee member of the Beaverdale Fall Festival committee and volunteers on the Beautification Committee as well as Living History Farms and the Community Playhouse. As a member of this great neighborhood within Des Moines, she would like to be involved even more and be an ambassador of the BNA mission.
